Pam recommends:
1. Do your homework. Know the difference between a thrift shop, and a high-end designer boutique. If you’re looking for Louis Vuitton or Chanel, chances are you won’t find it in a thrift shop.
2. Know your merchandise. Shop around and get a feel for what some of your favorite designer’s pieces cost. Compare them to your consignment store find.
3. Only shop at a consignment store with the finest reputation. Trusting the shop is essential, as some unreputable shops sell fake merchandise. Be aware of counterfeit labels. Ask how long the store has been in business, and check on the return policy.
4. Meet the owner & staff, and let them know exactly what you’re looking for. Often, items will come in and don’t even make it to the sales floor. You stand a better chance of getting that special piece with the staff’s assistance. Ritzy Rags offers a customer wish list; clients can sign up , and are personally called when items they’ve requested come in.
5. Take your time going through each rack, and try on all items. European sizes may differ from American sizes, even though they may appear to look the same.
6. Merchandise comes in and goes out very quickly, so shop accordingly.
7. Check out items carefully, as some unreputable shops take in clothes that are not in new condition.
